Situada ao norte da Nova Zelândia, no Oceano Pacífico, a ilha de Norfolk é usada como colônia penal nos séculos XVIII e XIX. Seus habitantes são descendentes dos presos e também dos colonizadores que se estabelecem mais tarde.

A Ilha Norfolque ou “Norfolk” tem no turismo sua principal atividade econômica, desde a metade dos anos 60. Sementes de pinus são exportadas e há um programa florestal para aumentar as reservas dessa árvore.

História

Descoberta pelo inglês James Cook em 1774, a ilha é usada como colônia penal (entre 1788 e 1814, e de 1825 a 1855) para onde são enviados criminosos julgados nos territórios australianos, na época dependências britânicas.

Norfolk passa ao controle do governo australiano em 1913. Só em 1979 obtém relativa autonomia interna com a criação de um Conselho Executivo e da Assembleia Legislativa.

Em 1985, o governo local assume maiores responsabilidades em assuntos internos. Dez anos depois é criado o Parque Nacional da Ilha de Norfolque, com 450 hectares.

Selos são emitidos pela Ilha Norfolque desde 1947.

Norfolk Island was provided with its own distinctive postmarker in 1892, but there was little opportunity for it to be used, as postage stamps of any kind could not be purchased on the island. The situation improved around 1898 when NSW stamps were placed on regular sale.

Norfolk Island secured final approval to have distinctive postage stamps in late 1939. The stamps were printed by the Note Printing Branch in Australia but because of wartime conditions the issue did not proceed.

During most of the period of World War II Norfolk Island was garrisoned by New Zealand Army and Airforce units which established their own postal service.

Norfolk Island assumed full control of its postal affairs along with the first issue of Norfolk Island stamps on 10 June 1947. Since then the territory has had complete control and responsibility for its stamp issues.

Designs are predominantly of island interest and include convict heritage, pitcairn heritage, tourism, local fauna and flora and special events.

Idioma – The Norfolk Island people speak their own language. Developed on Pitcairn Island after the mutiny on the Bounty to enable the English seamen and their Tahitian spouses to communicate, the language not surprisingly developed a unique melding of 18th-century Highlands English and Tahitian that can still be heard on Norfolk and Pitcairn Islands today. It is a beautiful and colourful language, we think, when spoken properly. Singsong is how it was often referred to by visiting naval captains of yore.
