Zoological Zociety
info@dublinzoo.ie – http://www.dublinzoo.ie/
A Sociedade Zoológica de Dublin foi fundada em 1830 com animais supplied by do zoológico de Londres. The Dublin Zoo of the 1830s was nothing like it is today. Dublin Zoo has had a long and fascinating history – here are just some highlights from the first hundred years. Em 1833, the entrance lodge to the Zoo was built for £30.00!
Em 1838, para celebrar a coroação da Rainha Vitória o zoo held an open day – 20.000 people visited, which is still the highest number of visitors in one day. Em 1844, o zoo recebeu a primeira girafa...
Times of trouble and war also caused problems for the Zoo. During the Easter Rising of 1916 getting out of Phoenix Park became difficult and meat ran out. In order to keep the lions and tigers alive, some of the other animals in the zoo were killed!
Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, coal was hard to come by so older trees were cut down and used to heat the tropical houses. There are still parts of the zoo that date back to the very beginning – why not come along and see them for yourself.
Our three giraffes are Oisin our male who was born at Fota Wildlife Park, Hayley who came from London Zoo and Grainne who was born here at Dublin Zoo. All three are partial to dog biscuits such as Ovals and Winalot and enjoy flaked maize which is similar to cornflakes. Grainne has a real passion for bananas!
20/06/2007 (http://www.rte.ie/news/2007/0620/zoo.html): Dublin Zoo has officially introduced its latest birth, a baby male giraffe. The three-week-old giraffe is said to be thriving after settling in to life at the zoo. Leo Oosterweghel, Director of Dublin Zoo, said the zoo was delighted with the new arrival to the now five-strong giraffe herd. Close to 180cm when he was born, the calf is more than two metres tall. When he reaches maturity, he can measure up to 5.5m high, just like his parents, Jenny and Robin. The giraffe has a very big appetite, eating an average of 63kg of leaf twigs every day. Giraffes have adaptable joints at the top of their necks, which allows them to stretch their heads upwards to reach their food. Dublin Zoo plans to hold a competition to decide a name for the new addition. Details will be announced in coming weeks.
09/06/2008 (http://www.rte.ie/news/2008/0609/zoo.html): Dublin Zoo has confirmed that the giraffe calf born yesterday is a female Rothschild giraffe. The calf was born at 2.20pm yesterday afternoon. She was monitored throughout the night and appears to be healthy and active. At present, mother Susie is not letting the calf drink from her, so after careful consideration, keepers have decided to bottle feed the new arrival. Dublin Zoo now has a total of six giraffes in its herd. For the immediate future, the new calf will not be on view in the African Plains. The Rothschild giraffe is the second most endangered subspecies of giraffe in the world. The population of this particular subspecies in the wild is measured in the hundreds. There are 283 Rothschild giraffes in the European zoo breeding population.
