Rare Okapi Birth Occurs at Columbus Zoo
30/05/2003: POWELL, Ohio – The Zoo’s 12-year-old female okapi, Sefini, gave birth to a calf on Thursday, May 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The infant is healthy and doing well after a 14-month gestation. The height and weight of the calf are unknown at this point, as the mother and infant are bonding in an off-exhibit location. The public will not be able to view the new okapi. It is the first okapi birth at the Zoo.
Okapis are one of the world’s rarest animals. The first captive okapi birth occurred in 1959 and since then, with the help of the Okapi Species Survival Plan, they have a total population of 83 in captivity and around 30,000 in the wild. They are native to the Congo region of Africa and are the closest relative of the giraffe. Adult okapis are 6 to 7 feet in length and weigh around 500-700 pounds. They live 15-20 years in captivity.
Sefini is on loan from Chicago Zoological Park, and has been a part of the Zoo’s animal population since April 2000. This is her fourth offspring. The sire of the infant okapi is El Jewar, a 7-year-old that has been at the Columbus Zoo since June 2000. He is on loan from the Dallas Zoo. This is his first offspring. In order to give mother and offspring a chance to bond, Sefini and the infant cannot be seen by the public and are off exhibit.

FILATELIA – OBLITERAÇÕES NO ESTADO
FDC com uma emissão de selos alusivos aos animais de um famoso carrossel... Obliterado em 01/10/1988, na cidade de Sandusky, no Estado de Ohio (OH) – região Meio Oeste dos Estados Unidos.
Uma das principais atrações de Burlington é o restaurado carrossel de 1910 – Dentzel Menagerie Carousel – que é a peça central do Parque da Cidade. Construído pela Companhia de Carrossel Dentzel, o carrossel tem 46 animais, entre eles uma girafa e 26 cavalos.
Existem somente 14 carrosséis desse tipo conservados no mundo todo. As esculturas de Dentzel são famosas por seu realismo e atenção aos detalhes que evidenciam as expressões faciais e a definição dos músculos. Os cavalos têm seus pêlos bastante naturais e todos os animais têm olhos feitos de vidro.
