Fundado em 1892, tem uma área de 77 hectares e é administrado pelo governo municipal, recebendo ajudo do Zoological Society.

The Giraffe area at the Milwaukee County Zoo is home to several giraffes, each with a unique appearance.

The giraffes residing in this area include: Malindi, nascida em 09/05/1984, Rosza, nascida em 14/09/1996 e Rahna que nasceu em 19/04/1992. As visitors will notice from their names, all of our giraffes are female. Malindi is the mother of six offspring, including Rosza.

Rahna is the lightest giraffe in the group with regard to her coloring. This light color is not unusual among giraffes. She is not an albino, but is considered to be on the lighter side of the giraffe color spectrum. Sometimes giraffes can be almost black in color, tan or even spotless (although this is very rare).

The Zoo giraffes, Rahna and Malindi, had offspring in 1998. Both of these offspring were female: Gudrun was born to Malindi and Skye was born to Rahna. In 1999, both Gudrun and Skye went to the Sacramento Zoo in California. They are doing very well.

Following are a few distinguishing characteristics of our giraffes: Malindi, the oldest, has a slightly disfigured lower lip, and her “horns” are straight. Looking closely, her white “x” on the right side of her face, just below the eye, may be noticeable. Her daughter, Rosza, has “horns” that lean somewhat inward. As mentioned, Rahna, has the lightest coloring of all of our giraffes.

Our giraffes enjoy a diverse diet consisting of alfalfa, hay and pellets. These pellets are similar in size to rabbit pellets. Vitamins and minerals are already in their pellets provided. During the summer months, the giraffes receive their favorite maple tree leaves and branches. For year-round treats, they enjoy bananas – skins and all!

Our giraffes are usually on outside exhibit during the warm, summer months. Because the winters in Wisconsin can be quite severe, with dangerous ice and snow, most of the time the giraffes remain indoors.
