A segunda maior das nove províncias sul-africanas, a diversidade do Leste do Cabo landscape ranges from the dry desolate Great Karoo to the steamy florestas da Wild Coast e o Vale Keiskamma. A área também abrange o fértil Vale Langkloof, renowned for its rich apple harvests, and is cradled by the mountainous southern Drakensberg.

The Eastern Cape was fraught with frontier battles. The 1820s saw the arrival of shiploads of British immigrants to Algoa Bay. Despite its colonial past, the Eastern Cape remains the home of the Xhosa speaking people of South Africa. The main language spoken is isiXhosa, followed by Afrikaans and English.

Localização

The shoreline of this province extends from do Rio Umtamvuna, na província de KwaZulu-Natal, to the rio Storms mouth on the scenic Rota do Jardim, no oeste, and stretching inland, to the norte, bordering no Reino de Lesoto.

Museu Nelson Mandela – The museum was officially opened on the 11/02/2000, at a function to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the release from prison of Nelson Mandela in 1990. The birthplace/museum is situated at Qunu, along the N2 highway, south of Umtata.

Valley of Desolation – The Valley of Desolation is one of the most spectacular sights in the country. The valley is the product of volcanic and erosive forces of nature over 100 million years. A steep and narrow road leads into the mountains that surround the valley – a journey not to be dared by the faint-hearted.

Grahamstown National Arts Festival e Museu Albany – Africa's largest and most colourful cultural event takes place, anualmente, na Universidade da cidade, offering a choice of the very best of both indigenous and imported talents.

Hole in the wall – Just south of Coffee Bay, on the eastern seaboard, is a prominent rock formation with a big hole in the centre. This distinctive site has become a symbol for the Xhosa in remembrance of a great historical tragedy – the “Great Cattle Killing”. The unique structure with a huge detached cliff that has a giant opening carved through its centre by the waves. The local Xhosa call this place “izi Khaleni”, which means “place of thunder”.

Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area – The Baviaanskloof (Valley of Baboons) is rapidly assuming national conservation and heritage prominence. The Baviaanskloof is a wilderness area situated on the eastern border of the Cape Floral Kingdom, some two and a half hour's drive from Port Elizabeth.

Jeffreys Bay – Experience the perfect wave in Jeffreys, the surfing capital of South Africa and a major international surfing venue that attracts visitors from all over the world to experience the “perfect wave”. Jeffreys Bay’s appeal began in the late 60s and continues with the hip-hop generation of today.

Snow Skiing – Tiffindell is the only ski resort in Africa. Situated in the Southern Drakensberg on the slopes of the highest mountain peak in the Eastern Cape (3001m). The resort was started in 1994 with basic small accommodation, a rough road and few facilities and has since become a popular destination for those in search of an exciting snow adventure.

When the mountains in and around the village of Elliot in the Eastern Cape are covered with snow every year, in some areas as deep as two metres, the area resembles a picturesque Swiss Alpine landscape. Adventurers can enjoy snow skiing at nearby Rhodes when the slopes of Be MacDhui, the highest mountain in the Cape Province, or the Tiffendell ski resort, just 25 km from Rhodes, are covered with snow.

NT

Praias – The Eastern Cape offers 800km of untouched and pristine coastline along with some of the world’s best beaches. Port Elizabeth, alone, has 40km of magnificent beaches and, with its perfect combination of warm water, calm sea and fair breezes, it is one of the best sailing venues in the world, and a magnet for all beach and water sports enthusiasts. The beaches include King’s Beach, Humewood Beach, Hobie Beach, Pollock Beach, Brighton Beach, Bluewater Bay, St George’s Strand and Wells Estate.

On the south side of the city, Schoenmakerskop – a picturesque seaside village – offers scenic picnic spots, coves, rock pools and holiday resorts with safe bathing and fishing in tidal pools.

A little further along is Sardinia Bay, a marine Reserve with miles of unspoilt coastline and crystal-clear water – excellent for diving, horse riding and scenic walks and hikes.

Parque Nacional Elefante Addo e Parque Nacional Zuurberg

O Parque Nacional Zebra da Montanha tem cerca de 30 quilômetros da pequena cidade de Cradock, is on the northern slopes of the 2.000 metros high Bankberg and has magnificent views over o Karoo.

As Zebra são animais muito adaptáveis as far as their habitat is concerned. Because it is a rare and almost extinct animal, South African wildlife and nature officials went to great lengths to preserve this majestic animal from extinction. Almost all of the Zebra found na África do Sul today live in nature reserves such as the Mountain Zebra National Park and the Commando Drift Nature Reserve.

NT

The proclamation of the Park in 1937 saved these animals from extinction and their current population is just 130. The best time to visit is March to May. It is the most comfortable for visiting the park, summers are warm and winter nights are cold. Rainfall averages 390mm per annum and there is regular snowfall on high lying areas.

There are many antelope species, eland, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, and gemsbok, mountain reed buck, and grey rhebok frequent the higher areas, whilst caracal occupy the niche of primary predator.

There are three species of zebra – Grevy's the biggest, Burchell's the most numerous, and the Cape mountain zebra the smallest and one of the rarest living mammals.

Parque Nacional Tsitsikamma

Também conhecido como “the place of much water”, is where the great breakers of the Indian Ocean relentlessly pound rocky shores; where temperate high forest and fynbos (indigenous flora) roll down to the sea and where ancient rivers carve their paths to the ocean down rocky ravines.

Southern Cape is an area of great natural beauty, with its high mountains, deep ravines, open fynbo s and rugged coastline, the Southern Cape has also become known as the Garden Route. At the heart of this beauty lies the indigenous Knysna Forest – Tsitsikamma Forest. With its pristine woodlands it forms the single largest remnant of the Afro-montane that once covered the eastern seaboard of the African continent.
